There's a realistic chance someone will attempt suicide in my home tonight, and there's nothing I can do about it.

Family friend went through a rough divorce a little over a year ago.
Last fall, attempted suicide. Has been threatening ever since. My mom offered to let her stay with us, if she agreed not to kill herself in our home. She said she couldn't promise that.
Moved to Victoria for a bit, has been living with family. She's been talking to my mom a lot, they're pretty tight.
The other night was what would have been the anniversary, and she was back in town. At like 1 in the morning, the police called the house, and said, we were called in about the potential for a suicide, but she doesn't want us around or to come with us, can you come get her. So, my mom drove across town to pick her up from a hotel, she spent the night here.
Given the situation, I thought there was a chance she was going to. Hard to sleep when you think that's going on in the guest bedroom next door.

Today I was on my way to meet a friend a few hours ago in an auto-rickshaw (you know...the three wheeled taxi from a James Bond Movie of the 70s/80s?). Typically, motion puts me to sleep and there I was, dozing off in the back of an auto when I was suddenly woken up while the auto was waiting at a red light. There was a crying woman asking me for some money because her sister was in labour on the street. She was sitting there and screaming in pain on the footpath (sidewalk) and this lady needed to get her to the hospital. I instinctively started to reach for my wallet when the auto driver told me it was a scam to get some money and a fairly regular one. Just to be sure, I offered to drop both of them to the nearest hospital (which was, conveniently, in the opposite direction to where I was going) but the woman wanted the money. I refused and she just left and went to the next car that was waiting. The driver later told me 4 of those women work that street every weekend.
I've come across a few scams but this shook me up a little...usually, you get desensitized to things like this living where I do but once in a while, something hits you. What is sad is I wonder what'll happen when someone like her genuinely needs help.

jesus... that is going a little too far!
sadly this kinda shit happens to me in my neighborhood all the time too (I have never had one that bad!)... I get the "I need a couple bucks to feed my kids" or "I am out of gas and I am just trying to get groceries" shit all the time... also strangers hit me up for rides to the grocery store ALL the time! and they limp with a cane and BS, but then I will see them in the parking lot the next day with no cane and walking just fine... the grocery store is .75 miles from my complex and they are just fucking lazy... I really hate it here, but I can drive out of the area and it is better I couldn't imagine not being able to get away from that kind of BS, I guess that is honestly why I <3 my country...

I just cut off my finger tip. Just a flesh wound, but now I won't have a callous on my index finger on my fretting hand again for a while.
