pics first, decision later. but probably yes.

I met a guy today who I hadn't seen in about a year, he had a big ol' beard, and looked fucking old.

He was in the pub, waiting on a call from the hospital where his wife was about to give birth :D

You're not allowed to have a beard where you work?

They make an exception in Ozz's company because they don't want a fat vagina monster sorting their mail.

There are plenty of places without a policy that frown upon it however. It's like how lots of High School basketball teams don't have official rules on facial hair but you'll still get benched if you grow a beard.

Yeah, first application that I've actually experienced that came to mind. I know plenty of offices use this too but I prefer using examples that I've actually experienced. Plus the basketball teams are super strict about it so I figured it showed the extreme side pretty well.

Are you implying that the NBA in any way stresses "rules" anymore?

I barely even consider professional basketball a sport anymore. I pretty much put it in the "Sports Entertainment" class with Professional Wrestling. You have to be a gifted athlete to compete and it's loosely tied to the competition it still holds the same name of, but its really just a matter of the most popular person is going to win most of the time.

EDIT - Anyway, with high school and probably a fair few colleges, they will ban all facial hair or at least give the coach discretion to be able to make people shave it a certain way. They do this to deter referee bias against the team under the premise that a team of clean shaven kids will look like a better bunch than the kids with poorly groomed or odd facial hair. The refs are more likely to penalize kids that look offensive to them.

It isn't as stressed in the NBA as many players already have a complete lack of respect for the refs and simply having poorly groomed facial hair isn't likely going to alter the refs opinion of you much. They already have to face assholes bitching at them for calling fouls that they committed on a frequent basis and players throwing tantrums on the court on a regular basis.

It's not strictly enforced, per se, and you can have 'tasteful beards' like super short and neatly trimmed but fuck that shit i want to grow a gandalf beard :(

That's fucking stupid. Instead of penalizing the kids and not letting them have a fucking beard they should punish whichever referee is stupid and unprofessional enough to have a bias against bearded people.

it is stupid, but I'm assuming the team's coach has the power to enforce a 'no beard' policy, but not over the referees. also, that kind of bias would be hard to prove.
